{"id":2132,"date":"2020-07-05T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-07-05T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/camilion.dms3labs.cat\/2020\/07\/05\/measure-in-3d-with-revit-old-post\/"},"modified":"2024-02-14T17:01:58","modified_gmt":"2024-02-14T16:01:58","slug":"measure-in-3d-with-revit-old-post","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/camilion.eu\/es\/2020\/07\/05\/measure-in-3d-with-revit-old-post\/","title":{"rendered":"Measure in 3D with Revit (old post)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/autodesk.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Autodesk\u00ae<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/revit\/overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Revit\u00ae<\/a> is a very complex and complete BIM software that allows you to do many things in many ways.<br \/>\nBut if there&rsquo;s one feature that has <em>always<\/em> been missing for this software that&rsquo;s precisely the ability to measure in 3D.<br \/>\nThis seemingly trivial task for some reason has not been integrated yet as of 2021 release, so the dev team at Camilion decided to create the <a href=\"https:\/\/camilion.eu\/en\/apps\/3DMeasure\/\">3DMeasure<\/a> tool.<\/p>\n<div class=\"toc\">\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"#what-is-3dmeasure\">What is 3DMeasure<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#taking-measurements\">Taking measurements<\/a>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"#select-point\">Select Point<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#select-edge\">Select Edge<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#measure-by-points\">Measure by Points<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#temp-lines-and-coordinates\">Temp lines and Coordinates<\/a>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"#options-b\">Options (b)<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#coordinate-base-c\">Coordinate Base (c)<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#units-d\">Units (d)<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"en_3dm_01.gif\" src=\"https:\/\/camilion.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/en_3dm_01.gif\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-3dmeasure\">What is <a href=\"https:\/\/camilion.eu\/en\/apps\/3DMeasure\/\">3DMeasure<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/camilion.eu\/en\/apps\/3DMeasure\/\">3DMeasure<\/a> tool is a plugin for <a href=\"https:\/\/autodesk.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Autodesk\u00ae<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/revit\/overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Revit\u00ae<\/a> which allows you to measure an existing edge or to select 2 arbitrary points in space.<br \/>\nA dialog box shows you the distance between these 2 points as well as their Delta values and Coordinates.<br \/>\nLet\u00b4s take a closer look at the <a href=\"https:\/\/camilion.eu\/en\/apps\/3DMeasure\/\">3DMeasure<\/a> dialog box:<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"taking-measurements\">Taking measurements<\/h2>\n<p>After clicking on the <a href=\"https:\/\/camilion.eu\/en\/apps\/3DMeasure\/\">3DMeasure<\/a> icon located in the <code>Camilion<\/code> tab, a dialog box will be displayed.<br \/>\nUnder the <code>Measure<\/code> section <code>(a)<\/code>, you can choose between the 3 buttons: <code>Select Point<\/code>, <code>Select Edge<\/code> or <code>Measure by Points<\/code>.<br \/>\nLet&rsquo;s explore in detail each button.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"en_revit3dm_01.png\" src=\"https:\/\/camilion.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/en_revit3dm_01.png\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"select-point\">Select Point<\/h3>\n<p>Clicking on <code>Select Point<\/code> will prompt the user to click twice: the first click is needed to select a planar face to define a temporary workplane; the second click defines the actual point. When the second click is performed, the <code>Coordinates<\/code> section <code>(e)<\/code> is updated to reflect the coordinates of the chosen point (works for links as well).<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"select-edge\">Select Edge<\/h3>\n<p>Simply prompts the user to select an existing edge in the model (links included). Once the selection is performed, both the <code>Dimensions<\/code> section and the <code>Coordinates<\/code> section are populated with data.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"measure-by-points\">Measure by Points<\/h3>\n<p>This command prompts the user to select 2 points in the same manner <code>Select Point<\/code> works: first, a surface must be selected and then a point on the surface defines the actual point. These 2 clicks must be repeated to define the second point.<\/p>\n<p>After the 4 clicks have been performed, the <code>Dimensions<\/code> and <code>Coordinates<\/code> sections will be updated with the data relative to the chosen points (works for links as well).<\/p>\n<p><em>Tip<\/em>: if any command is active, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/revit\/overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Revit&rsquo;s\u00ae<\/a> user prompt, located in the lower left corner of the UI, displays a message regarding the expected operation to be performed by the user to complete the command.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"temp-lines-and-coordinates\">Temp lines and Coordinates<\/h2>\n<h3 id=\"options-b\">Options <code>(b)<\/code><\/h3>\n<p>If you with to visualize a temporary line, you can activate the <code>Display Line<\/code> checkbox.<br \/>\nThis line will be deleted automatically on the next measurement taken or after the <a href=\"https:\/\/camilion.eu\/en\/apps\/3DMeasure\/\">3DMeasure<\/a> app is closed, so there is no need to delete it manually.<br \/>\nIf you wish to keep this line, just tick the <code>Keep Line<\/code> checkbox.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"coordinate-base-c\">Coordinate Base <code>(c)<\/code><\/h3>\n<p>Note that in any moment you can change the coordinate base to any of the three available options:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><code>Internal<\/code><\/li>\n<li><code>Project Base Point<\/code><\/li>\n<li><code>Survey Point<\/code><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The coordinates will be updated automatically upon changing the coordinate base.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"units-d\">Units <code>(d)<\/code><\/h3>\n<p>The units used and the rounding applied will be defined by your project settings. To change the units or rounding simply go to <code>Manage<\/code> &gt; <code>Settings<\/code> &gt; <code>Project Units<\/code>.
